QU’EST-CE QUE LE FRANÇAIS INTENSIF?
A u Canada jusqu’à tout récemment, il n’y avait que deux options pour l’apprentissage du français comme langue seconde dans les systèmes scolaires: le programme de français régulier, normalement connu sous le nom de «Français de base», et l’immersion. Une troisième voie existe maintenant : le français intensif.
Il s’agit d’un programme qui offre aux élèves qui ne sont pas inscrits à un programme d’immersion une façon efficace d’apprendre à communiquer spontanément en français. Comme cette approche est basée sur la littératie, les élèves apprennent à parler, à lire et à écrire en français, en cet ordre.
La grammaire est acquise naturellement par l’utilisation de la langue à l’oral plutôt que par la mémorisation de règles. Les élèves parlent, lisent et écrivent en français à propos d’eux-mêmes et de leurs expériences, et participent activement en classe. Le français intensif diffère de l’immersion en ce que les élèves n’apprennent aucune autre matière scolaire en français. Il se différencie aussi du français de base, du fait que le français est en tout temps la langue de communication en classe. Le programme se base sur l’approche neurolinguistique pour l’apprentissage de langues secondes.
COMMENT FONCTIONNE LE FRANÇAIS INTENSIF?
E n général, la première année du programme est offerte en 5e ou 6e année (élèves âgés de 11 ou 12 ans). Le programme est parfois précédé du programme pré-intensif en 4e ou 5e année (élèves âgés de 9 ou 10 ans). Au cours d’un semestre, pendant cinq mois, à peu près la moitié de la journée est vouée à l’apprentissage du français. Les mathématiques et certaines autres matières qui sont du domaine de spécialistes (par exemple, la musique) sont enseignées en anglais. Au cours des cinq autres mois, les élèves suivent leur horaire normal, tel qu’illustré ci-dessous.
Le temps accordé aux programmes peut varier quelque peu selon l’autorité scolaire.
QUELS SONT LES RÉSULTATS?
À la fin de la période intensive de cinq mois du programme, les élèves peuvent communiquer de façon spontanée en français (niveau A1, CECRL) sur des sujets se rapportant à leur vécu.
Au Nouveau-Brunswick, le français intensif et le français post intensif ont remplacé le français de base pour tous les élèves qui ne sont pas inscrits en immersion. La participation au programme est obligatoire de la 5e jusqu’à la fin de la 10e année.
À la fin de leur parcours au secondaire, les élèves sont capables de communiquer indépendamment sur une vaste gamme de sujets. Le ministère de l’Éducation et du Développement de la petite enfance du Nouveau-Brunswick rapporte que, selon les données recueillies auprès d’élèves en 12e année au cours de l’année scolaire 2011-2012 (dernière année du français de base au N.-B.), 44 % des élèves inscrits en français de base pouvaient entretenir une conversation en français au niveau De Base Plus (communication spontanée, A2) ou plus. Suite à l’implantation du français post intensif, les données recueillies en 2018-2019 indiquent que près de 70 % des élèves inscrits au programme en 12e année pouvaient communiquer au niveau De Base Plus (A2) ou au-delà.
Nous vous offrons deux exemples d’élèves qui parlent le français en fin de parcours : une élève à la fin de la 10e année (Vidéo 1) et une élève à la fin de la 12e année (Vidéo 2) du post français intensif.
OÙ PEUT-ON TROUVER LE FRANÇAIS INTENSIF?
U n certain nombre d’autorités scolaires à travers le Canada (sauf le Québec et l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard) offrent le programme, y compris le français post intensif. Au Nouveau-Brunswick, le français intensif et post intensif sont devenus les programmes de français obligatoires (4e à 10e année; cours optionnel en 11e et 12e année) pour les élèves qui ne sont pas inscrits aux programmes d’immersion française.
En 2018, on a célébré les 20 ans de la première mise-en-œuvre du français intensif à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador.
